NEC is in the unique position of offering a new portfolio of SSL projectors. Solid State Light Sources (SSL) are light producing systems made up of either LED devices or Laser Diodes. Light produced with SSL systems inherently have a longer and steadier brightness that decreases at a much slower pace over time than lamp based systems. This technology offers the highest image quality while its operating life span far exceeds traditional lighting methods.

In January, NEC introduced their PX803UL projector, a single-chip DLP 8,000-lumen laser projector that is the first of its kind in this market category. The single-chip DLP projector combined with a laser light source delivers 20,000 hours of virtually maintenance-free life. A longer life span and sealed optical engine allow the projector to be used for extended periods of time, including applications running 24x7. Throughout the extended usage of the projector, the DLP technology provides a better white uniformity creating a clear, consistent image.
Projection offers a unique opportunity in digital signage. They can be used to create signage much larger than traditional digital displays and deploy that signage in areas that simply aren’t suitable for a digital screen. Still, the price of projector lamps and the inevitable decline in brightness of those projectors has hampered the widespread adoption of projection-based signage. The development of laser projectors, though, is opening the door to the increased use of projection-based signage.
